Adairsville History
Adairsville, Georgia, has a rich history that dates back to its early days as a village in the Oothcalooga Valley. Named after Chief John Adair, a Cherokee leader whose father was a Scottish trader, Adairsville began to take shape in the early 19th century. The establishment of Adair Station in 1846 by William Watts marked a significant development, as the arrival of the Western and Atlantic Railroad spurred growth and economic activity. By 1847, the town had a completed depot, and Adairsville began to flourish with businesses and mills opening around the town square.
One of the most notable events in Adairsville's history is its involvement in the Civil War. The town was a significant site during the Atlanta Campaign, and the Battle of Adairsville, which occurred on May 17, 1864, was a key engagement. Although the battle was relatively minor, it was part of a series of maneuvers and skirmishes that allowed Union General William T. Sherman to push Confederate forces further south towards Atlanta.
Another major historical event linked to Adairsville is the Great Locomotive Chase of April 12, 1862. This daring raid saw Union soldiers attempting to sabotage the Confederate rail network, and the chase passed through the town, adding a dramatic chapter to its Civil War history.
Adairsville's historical significance is also highlighted by its status as the first Georgia town to be listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This recognition underscores the town's well-preserved 19th-century architecture and its historical landmarks.
Today, Adairsville celebrates its heritage through various events and festivals, such as the Great Locomotive Chase Festival and numerous community activities held in its historic downtown area. Visitors can explore the Adairsville Depot History Museum, which showcases artifacts and stories from the town's past, including a model train replica of the town.
