Founded in 1837 as the endpoint of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Atlanta quickly became a transportation hub for the South. Originally named Terminus and later Marthasville, the city was officially renamed Atlanta in 1847, reflecting its growing role in connecting trade routes. During the Civil War, Atlanta played a critical role as a Confederate supply hub, making it a major target for Union forces. In 1864, General William T.
