Founded in 1837 as the endpoint of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Atlanta quickly became a transportation hub for the South. Originally named Terminus and later Marthasville, the city was officially renamed Atlanta in 1847, reflecting its growing role in connecting trade routes. By the mid-19th century, Atlanta had become a thriving center for commerce and industry.
During the Civil War, Atlanta played a critical role as a Confederate supply hub, making it a major target for Union forces. In 1864, General William T.
