Atlanta History
Founded in 1837 as the endpoint of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Atlanta quickly became a transportation hub for the South. Originally named Terminus and later Marthasville, the city was officially renamed Atlanta in 1847, reflecting its growing role in connecting trade routes. By the mid-19th century, Atlanta had become a thriving center for commerce and industry.
During the Civil War, Atlanta played a critical role as a Confederate supply hub, making it a major target for Union forces. In 1864, General William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea" resulted in the burning of much of the city, leaving Atlanta in ruins. However, Atlanta's resilience was evident in its rapid post-war rebuilding, leading to its reputation as the "Phoenix City," rising from the ashes of destruction to become a beacon of progress in the New South.
In the 20th century, Atlanta emerged as a key player in the Civil Rights Movement. As the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the city became a focal point for activism, with significant events unfolding at institutions like Ebenezer Baptist Church and Morehouse College. The city's commitment to equality and progress helped shape modern America, solidifying its role as a leader in social change.
Today, Atlanta stands as a dynamic metropolis, known for its booming economy, diverse culture, and influential industries, including film, technology, and transportation. Home to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world's busiest airport, and major corporations like Coca-Cola and Delta, Atlanta continues to thrive as a global city, blending history with innovation.
