January is National Radon Action Month. Learn about radon risks and take action in January. Radon is a radioactive gas naturally emitted from the soil and is present everywhere. You can't see, smell, or taste radon, but it could be present at dangerous levels in your home. It is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America.
Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. Nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States (1 in 5 in Georgia) is estimated to have an elevated radon level.
You can take action during National Radon Action Month to protect your family, clients, and friends.
- Test your home. A radon test is a simple 48-hour monitoring process in your home. During this test, a detector is set up to take hourly readings. The home can be occupied, however, the testing area should remain undisturbed while maintaining normal living conditions. Upon completion, you will receive a report of the average readings that will indicate if elevated Radon levels are detected.
- Encourage others to learn about radon and test their homes (including new home purchases).
