Carlton developed in the late 19th century as a rural agricultural hub within Madison County. Named after a prominent local family, the community's early growth was tied to cotton farming and small trade. The arrival and expansion of the railroad in the late 1800s brought new opportunities, allowing farmers to transport goods more efficiently to markets in Athens, Augusta, and beyond. This connectivity helped Carlton grow from a quiet crossroads into a bustling small-town center.

Carlton's downtown emerged around the depot, with general stores, mills, blacksmith shops, and supply businesses catering to residents and travelers. Although cotton dominated the local economy for decades, the boll weevil infestations of the early 20th century and shifts in market demand forced farmers to diversify. These changes helped the town weather economic ups and downs, including the Great Depression, when self-sufficiency and community cooperation were essential.

By the mid-20th century, improved roads and automobiles began to reduce Carlton's dependence on the railroad. While the depot eventually lost its central role, the town retained its rural charm. Local traditions, such as seasonal festivals and church homecomings, continued to strengthen community identity.

Today, Carlton is a quiet rural town, appealing to those seeking open spaces, farmland, and a slower pace of life.
