Cassville, established in 1833 and initially named Cassville Academy, was once the thriving county seat of Cass County, named after General Lewis Cass. The town quickly developed into a significant educational center with the establishment of Cassville Female College and Cherokee Baptist College. The Civil War brought tremendous hardship to Cassville. In 1864, during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, the town was heavily damaged by Union forces. The devastation was so complete that the county seat was moved to Cartersville, and Cassville never fully recovered from the destruction.
