Chickamauga History
Chickamauga lies within the ancestral homeland of the Chickamauga Cherokee, a resilient band who fought to defend their territory along the river systems of Georgia and Tennessee. Their legacy is embedded in the town's name, which reflects a deep cultural memory and connection to the land.
After forced removal of the Cherokee, settlers founded Crawfish Springs, which became a community social and civic center for Walker County. In 1836, James Gordon built the Gordon-Lee Mansion near Crawfish Springs, soon serving as plantation center and later as Union headquarters during the Civil War. The current city grew around this root.
The Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 was one of the Civil War's fiercest, and much of the fighting occurred on lands now preserved by the Chickamauga National Military Park. The nearby mansion served as hospital and sanctuary for wounded soldiers, anchoring the site's historical significance.
As industry emerged, Chickamauga became a textile mill town in the early 1900s, later transitioning to a bedroom community for Chattanooga. The old rail depot now houses the Model Train Museum, celebrating both its locomotive past and community storytelling.
Built along vital highways, Chickamauga evolved into a cultural crossroads. Attractions like the Gordon-Lee Mansion, the Coke Oven Park, and Crawfish Springs highlight its ability to preserve heritage while embracing retail, art, and tourism.
Today, Chickamauga blends small-town charm with scenic mountain backdrop. A mosaic of historic neighborhoods, cultural sites, and green spaces ensures residents enjoy rich heritage with modern amenities—making it both a living museum and a welcoming home.
