Coalmont History
Coalmont lies atop the Cumberland Plateau and owes its very name to the coal mining that defined its early growth. Prior to European settlement, Native American tribes including the Cherokee used the plateau's forested ridges for hunting and travel. European-American settlers arrived in the early 19th century, and by the late 1800s, large tracts of land were acquired by coal companies to establish mines and company towns.
Coal mining drove Coalmont's development. The town became part of the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company's operations, with miners extracting coal from the plateau and shipping it to industrial markets in Chattanooga, Nashville, and Birmingham. Timber harvesting complemented mining as a major industry, and sawmills processed hardwoods from the surrounding forests.
The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century made Coalmont a vital shipping point for coal and timber. Company-built housing, stores, and schools fostered a close-knit but company-controlled community. Roads were later improved to connect Coalmont with neighboring plateau towns like Tracy City and Gruetli-Laager, as well as the valley cities below.
Despite the decline of coal mining by the mid-20th century, Coalmont preserved its small-town character. Churches, volunteer fire services, and local schools continue to form the backbone of community life. Annual events and sports programs bring residents together, maintaining traditions rooted in the area's industrial heritage.
Today, Coalmont is a quiet community with affordable homes and abundant natural beauty. Its proximity to Savage Gulf State Park and South Cumberland State Park makes it appealing for outdoor enthusiasts, while its central location on the plateau provides convenient access to Monteagle, Tracy City, and the I-24 corridor.
