Cordele, the county seat of Crisp County, was established in 1888 and quickly became known as the "Watermelon Capital of the World." The land was originally inhabited by the Creek people before being ceded to settlers, and later developed as the railroads expanded through central Georgia. The city itself was named after the daughter of Samuel Hawkins, a prominent railroad official whose company helped build the infrastructure that made Cordele possible.

The arrival of the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery Railroad spurred Cordele's rapid economic growth in the late 19th century. Agriculture, particularly cotton, tobacco, and later watermelons, became the backbone of the local economy. Cordele gained national recognition for producing some of the sweetest watermelons in the country, which remains a source of pride and celebration with the annual Watermelon Festival.

Cordele's infrastructure was transformed by the construction of U.S. Highways 41 and 280, along with Interstate 75, which positioned the city as a major crossroads in South Georgia. The proximity to major highways allowed Cordele to expand its trade and transportation capabilities, making it an important stop for both freight and travelers. The creation of Lake Blackshear and the Crisp County Power Dam in the 1930s further boosted regional development and recreational opportunities.

The community has grown steadily, balancing its agricultural heritage with modern development. Churches, schools, and civic institutions have long served as the backbone of Cordele's character. The city has maintained its small-town charm while fostering economic growth through manufacturing, logistics, and tourism related to nearby attractions.
