Fort Stewart History
Fort Stewart, GA, is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, spanning over 280,000 acres across Liberty and Bryan Counties. Established in 1940 as Camp Stewart, the base was named in honor of Lt. Col. Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War hero. It served as a training and staging ground during World War II, briefly decommissioned after the war, then reactivated during the Cold War and ultimately redesignated Fort Stewart in 1950.
Through the decades, Fort Stewart has grown into a premier training center for the 3rd Infantry Division and other units, hosting major military exercises—from desert drills in the 1980s to modern armored and airborne training today. Its deep pine forests, extensive ranges, and wetlands provide diverse training environments and serve as habitat for numerous native species.
The surrounding civilian communities evolved alongside the base. Hinesville and Walthourville expanded to support military families, local schools, and amenities. Local businesses, civic organizations, and cultural events have a strong connection to the post and its residents, reflecting deep civic-military integration.
Today, Fort Stewart continues as a vital military installation and community anchor. The area offers exceptional quality of life—with access to coastal beaches, affordable housing, good schools, and a deep sense of camaraderie among residents, both military and civilian. Fort Stewart remains a place where duty, community, and family intersect.
