Meldrim History
Meldrim, located in Effingham County, developed from Georgia's early colonial settlements as pioneers moved inland from the coastal city of Savannah. Indigenous peoples originally lived in the region, followed by European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Effingham County itself was one of Georgia's first counties, established in 1777, and communities like Meldrim formed as agriculture spread.
By the late 19th century, the arrival of the railroad transformed Meldrim from farmland into a more established community. The rail lines connected Meldrim with Savannah and other trade centers, making the area an important transport junction. Farming and timber were the backbone of the economy, and the community grew around its industries and rail access.
As infrastructure improved, highways and bridges connected Meldrim to Pooler, Savannah, and Richmond Hill, further shaping its development.
