Pooler History
Pooler originated in the 1830s as a key stop along the Central of Georgia Railroad. Named after Captain Robert William Pooler, a West Point graduate and railroad engineer, the town became known as Pooler's Station. It played a notable role during the Civil War when Union officers stopped here before the peaceful surrender of Savannah during Sherman's March to the Sea. This historic moment marked Pooler as more than just a railway hub—it became a place of strategic importance.
In the years that followed, the area remained quiet until a surge of development occurred in the late 19th century. With the offer of free land to settlers who would build permanent homes, Pooler began to take shape as a community. Churches, mills, and small businesses established a strong local foundation, drawing families to the area and encouraging long-term settlement.
By the early 1900s, Pooler was officially incorporated as a town. Infrastructure began to expand, from the building of a town hall and local schools to the rise of a small agricultural and industrial economy. Dairy farms and brickyards were common, and Pooler continued to grow steadily throughout the first half of the 20th century as it built out its own civic identity.
The paving of Highway 80 and the construction of I-95 fueled a rapid transformation in the latter half of the century. What was once a quiet railroad town evolved into one of the fastest-growing communities in the Savannah area. Today, Pooler is known for its thriving commercial districts, family-friendly neighborhoods, and attractions like the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum—blending rich history with modern progress.
