Rex History

Rex, Georgia, located in Clayton County, is a small community with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Originally called Stonewall, the town was renamed Rex in 1882 when a post office was established. The name "Rex" is derived from the Latin word for "king," reflecting the town's aspirations for growth and prominence. In its early days, Rex was a rural farming community, with cotton as the primary crop, and it played a key role in the agricultural economy of the region.

The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century helped to spur the town's growth, as it became a stop on the line connecting Atlanta to Macon. The railroad brought new opportunities for trade and commerce, and Rex developed into a small but thriving community. The town's historic buildings, including churches and homes, reflect its 19th-century origins and provide a glimpse into its past.

Throughout the 20th century, Rex remained a predominantly rural community, though it began to see changes as nearby Atlanta expanded. Residential development gradually transformed the area, and Rex became part of the growing suburban landscape of Clayton County. Despite these changes, the town has retained much of its historical character and rural charm.

Today, Rex is a quiet, family-oriented community that offers a peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. The town continues to honor its history through preservation efforts and community events that celebrate its past. Rex remains a place where the old and the new coexist, with a strong sense of community and pride in its heritage.
