A Brief History of Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill began as Ways Station, part of colonial-era agricultural lands near Fort Argyle in the 1730s. By the 19th century, its fertile river-bottom soils supported prosperous rice plantations, linked to Savannah via the Ogeechee River and canal systems.
The Civil War brought destruction: Fort McAllister, built for Savannah's defense, was captured in 1864. Agricultural decline followed, exacerbated into the early 20th century by hurricanes and economic hardship.
In 1925, industrialist Henry Ford purchased the plantation grounds and surrounding land. His arrival brought sweeping change—roads, schools, churches, a sawmill, housing, and healthcare—reinvigorating the community. In 1941, the town was renamed Richmond Hill in honor of Ford's winter estate.
Incorporated in 1962 and designated a Preserve America Community in 2004, Richmond Hill has since transformed into a thriving suburban city. Today it preserves its rich legacy—from colonial forts and rice fields to Ford's transformative legacy—while offering modern amenities and cultural depth.
