Founded in 1839 by Roswell King, the City of Roswell has a rich history rooted in industry and Southern heritage. King established the Roswell Manufacturing Company, using the power of local rivers to drive textile production. The city officially incorporated on February 16, 1854, growing into an important economic hub. During the Civil War, Union forces occupied Roswell from July 5 - July 17, 1864, and under orders from General William T. Sherman, soldiers burned the Roswell Manufacturing Company mill to the ground. Decades later, lightning caused a second fire, once again destroying the mill. From a population of just 479 in 1870, Roswell grew slowly until the late 20th century, exploding from 23,337 residents in 1980 to 79,334 by 2000. As of the 2010 census, Roswell had a population of 88,346, making it Georgia's eighth-largest city. The City Hall building, completed in 1991 at a cost of $12 million, serves as a symbol of Roswell's commitment to progress.

In 2003, the Georgia Municipal Association honored Roswell with the City of Excellence Award, and it has consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States, according to City Crime Rankings.
