Waleska History
Waleska, Georgia, is a small town located in Cherokee County, with a history that dates back to the early 19th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people, and it wasn't until the 1830s, during the forced removal of Native Americans known as the Trail of Tears, that European settlers began arriving in the region. The town was named after Warluskee, the daughter of a Cherokee chief who had once lived in the area. The name was anglicized to Waleska, and the town was officially incorporated in 1889.
One of the most significant developments in Waleska's history was the founding of Reinhardt College, now Reinhardt University, in 1883 by Captain A.M. Reinhardt and his brother-in-law. The college was established to provide educational opportunities for the rural residents of north Georgia and has played a central role in the community ever since. Reinhardt University remains a major cultural and educational institution in Waleska, attracting students from across the region and contributing to the town's growth.
Waleska developed as a small agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with cotton being the primary crop grown in the area. The town served as a local center for trade and commerce, with farmers bringing their goods to market. However, like many rural communities, Waleska faced economic challenges in the early 20th century as the cotton industry declined.
Today, Waleska is a quiet, scenic town known for its strong sense of community and its connection to Reinhardt University. The town's rich history, combined with its peaceful rural setting, makes it a unique destination in north Georgia. Waleska continues to embrace its historical roots while looking to the future, with a focus on education and community development.
