Warm Springs History

Warm Springs, Georgia, is best known as the location of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House and the therapeutic warm springs that gave the town its name. The town's history dates back to the 19th century when the naturally warm springs, which remain a constant 88 degrees Fahrenheit, attracted visitors seeking relief from various ailments. The area's first hotel was built in the 1830s, and Warm Springs became a popular resort destination for those seeking the healing properties of the springs.

In the early 20th century, Warm Springs gained international fame due to its association with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1924, Roosevelt, who had been diagnosed with polio, visited the springs in search of relief from his paralysis. He found the warm waters beneficial and returned frequently, eventually purchasing property in the area. In 1932, he built the Little White House, which became his retreat and where he would later pass away in 1945.

During Roosevelt's time in Warm Springs, the town became a center for polio treatment, with the establishment of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation in 1927. The foundation attracted polio patients from across the country, and the town became synonymous with the fight against the disease. Roosevelt's presence also brought significant attention and development to Warm Springs, transforming it into a bustling community.

Today, Warm Springs remains a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to see the Little White House, the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, and the town's historic downtown area. The legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt continues to be a central part of Warm Springs' identity, and the town's connection to the president and the history of polio treatment makes it a unique and historically significant location in Georgia.
