Whiteside History
Whiteside is a small historic community located in the southeastern corner of Marion County, near the Tennessee-Georgia state line. Originally a Cherokee settlement, the area was known as Running Water before European-American settlers renamed it in honor of James Whiteside, a prominent Chattanooga lawyer and early railroad investor.
During the mid-1800s, Whiteside gained prominence with the expansion of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, which cut through the rugged mountains and linked the area to regional trade networks. The town became a strategic location for industry and transportation during the Civil War, as rail lines were critical to both Union and Confederate movements.
Whiteside's location near the Tennessee River and the railroad made it a vital supply point. Bridges and tunnels in the area were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during the war, making it a hotbed of strategic conflict. After the war, the town transitioned into a quiet rail stop surrounded by forested hills and farmland.
Though small in size, Whiteside retains historical charm and significance. It's home to Civil War landmarks, historic rail tunnels, and scenic overlooks. Residents value its quietude and proximity to major outdoor attractions, including Nickajack Lake and the Tennessee River Gorge.
Today, Whiteside is a tranquil, rural community with a rich history and strong natural appeal. It attracts outdoor enthusiasts, retirees, and homeowners who seek scenic views, privacy, and access to recreation while remaining close to Chattanooga and South Pittsburg.
