Winder, Georgia, located in Barrow County, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. Originally known as Jug Tavern, the area was settled around the 1790s by pioneers who were attracted to its fertile land and strategic location between Atlanta and Athens. Jug Tavern grew slowly at first, with its economy primarily centered on agriculture. The town's name came from a popular local tavern that served drinks in jugs, reflecting its rural, frontier character.
The transformation of Jug Tavern into Winder began in the late 19th century when the railroad reached the area. The arrival of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in the 1880s spurred economic growth, as it provided better access to markets and brought more residents to the town. In 1893, Jug Tavern was renamed Winder in honor of John H. Winder, a railroad executive who played a key role in bringing the railway to the area.
